A Brief History of Valley Stream

In 1640, a mere fourteen years after Dutch colonists arrived in Manhattan, what would become Valley Stream was purchased by the Dutch West India Company from Rockaway Native Americans. Still, it would take two more centuries for the woodland area to be developed. In 1840, the census listed about 20 mostly farming families, and the area was broken up into sections called Fosters Meadow, Rum Junction, Cookie Hill, Skunks Misery, and Hungry Harbor.

It took almost another century for the area to be incorporated into the village of Valley Stream in 1925. The community grew slowly, helped by the South Side Railroad and the emergence of Merrick Road as a major artery connecting Merrick in the east and Jamaica in the west. Many tourists who vacationed in Valley Stream from Brooklyn and Queens ended up moving there permanently.
